LaCie Enhances Portable DVD±RW Drive with New Features and a New Look

Today LaCie announced the latest versions of its Portable DVD±RW Drive, design by Sam Hecht.

Now with a sleek black finish, the award-winning LaCie Portable DVD±RW includes new multimedia burning solutions, allowing users to piece together sophisticated movie, music, and photo projects in a matter of minutes - creating customized CDs or DVDs wherever they go.

Featuring two versions for easy setup and seamless compatibility, users can choose from the multimedia burning solution for Mac or PC. The Windows® version comes with Creator Suite 10, while the combined Mac® and Windows version comes with Toast 9 Basic, as well as Creator Suite 10.

Additionally, it is USB bus-powered so only one cable is needed to start burning CDs and DVDs. The 8x drive is less than an inch tall and weighs under a pound - fitting perfectly into a bag, backpack, or briefcase.

"With the popularity of lightweight laptop computers and netbook solutions, which often exclude optical drives, users need an ultra-portable DVD±RW solution that will allow them to play, save, and share their multimedia collections," Christelle Dexet, Mutimedia Product Manager. "The new, black, Sam Hecht Portable DVD±RW offers mobility, simplicity, and of course style - without compromising the key features that complement their computing systems and their lifestyles."

The LaCie Portable DVD±RW drive is equipped with LightScribe - an innovative technology that allows you to burn silkscreen-quality labels directly onto CDs and DVDs with a laser instead of a printer.

The LaCie Portable DVD±RW will be available in versions for Mac and PC, through the LaCie Store Online, LaCie Reseller+ and LaCie Corner, starting at the suggested retail price of $89.99 VAT included. For more information, visit http://www.lacie.com.

Digital Rebellion Releases FCS Maintenance Pack

  • Digital Rebellion LLC today announced the availability of FCS Maintenance Pack, a suite of software tools to maintain and optimize Final Cut Studio systems.

Major problems always seem to occur right on a deadline - FCS Maintenance Pack is designed to rapidly diagnose and fix common issues, ensuring users get back on track as quickly as possible. With the Task Scheduler utility, maintenance tasks can even be scheduled in the background so users never have to worry about them.

The software also includes several tools for simplifying common tasks such as installing and managing plugins, locating corrupt media in a Final Cut Pro timeline, analyzing crash logs, streamlining applications to remove unused architectures and languages, and much more.

The applications in the suite include:

  • Autosave Cleaner - Expanding on the basic autosave management in Final Cut Pro, Autosave Cleaner offers more flexibility and can remove autosaves based on additional criteria including age and file size. It can also be set to automatically remove autosaves from the Trash so that you don't have to keep emptying it when working on a long project.
  • Compressor Repair - Finds and repairs problems that could be preventing Compressor from working correctly.
  • Content Manager - A tool to manage the content that ships with Final Cut Studio. You can repair broken content links and remove or move content quickly and easily.
  • Corrupt Clip Finder - When you have corrupt media on your timeline, Final Cut Pro will simply crash and you will not have any idea which clip is causing the issue. You face the long and arduous process of reconnecting each clip one-by-one in order to find the problematic one. Corrupt Clip Finder finds the corrupt clip for you in seconds.
  • Crash Analyzer - All of us have at some point received cryptic or confusing error messages and crash logs. Crash Analyzer analyzes your Final Cut Pro logs, attempts to diagnose the cause of the crash and suggests ways to solve the problem.
  • FCS Housekeeper - Trashes various caches and temporary files to keep Final Cut Studio in peak operating condition. FCS Housekeeper is even more useful when used in conjunction with Task Scheduler to run these tasks automatically.
  • FCS Remover - Uninstall all Final Cut Studio components with the press of a button. Can remove the entire suite or individual applications.
  • File Salvage - Salvages video frames from corrupt movie clips. Currently compatible with DV, DVCPRO50 and Motion JPEG media. The input file need not even be a QuickTime container - it can extract data from any type of file, even if it is not a movie clip.
  • Plugin Manager - Plugin Manager allows you to quickly and easily organize your Final Cut Pro and Motion plugins. You can group them together, install new plugins and selectively enable and disable them - all without having to worry about where the plugins are physically located on disk. Also includes a crash tester for discovering which plugins are causing Final Cut Pro to crash upon startup.
  • Project Repair - Attempts to repair non-launching projects so that they are recognized by Final Cut Pro again. Can fix the infamous "Project is unreadable or too new for this version of Final Cut Pro" error.
  • Preference Manager - Trash, lock, backup and restore Final Cut Studio preference files. Can also be configured to restore a particular set of preferences before a certain project is launched for per-project preferences.
  • System Toolkit - A wealth of options to tweak and tune up your system, including:

Extra launch and display options for Final Cut Studio applications

  • Manage Final Cut Studio registration
  • Manage QuickTime components
  • Scan, repair, refresh files and remove temp files from disks
  • Adjust system and per-application scaling
  • Streamline your applications by removing unused languages and architectures
  • Unlock hidden options in OS X

FCS Maintenance Pack is available for a mere $99 and a fully-functional 15 day trial is available to give users a complete taste of the software's capabilities. FCS Maintenance Pack is an essential troubleshooting and maintenance tool that every post production professional should have in their toolkit.

More details about FCS Maintenance Pack are available at http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcs_maintenance.htm.

Inlet's Spinnaker the de facto Standard for Preparing Digital Media Content for Apple iPhone

Inlet Technologies, the leader in live streaming and video-on-demand solutions for digital media, announced today it is helping to enable HTTP adaptive streaming of content to the Apple® iPhoneTM and iPod® Touch® for some of the most innovative broadcasters, entertainment and retail enterprises, and sports organizations around the globe.

Inlet recently teamed with Akamai Technologies to power Turner Sports' live streaming of the 91st PGA Championship to iPhone and iPod Touch users. Building on the success of 3.4 million video streams across the Turner Sports online golf portfolio during the PGA Championship, video streaming of the FedExCup championship is ramping up. Live coverage of key holes at all four tournaments leading up to the crowning of the champion will be available through the iPhone PGA App, in addition to the online component. In early August, Inlet and Akamai also worked together to help Apple deliver the first live concert streamed to the iPhone - a show featuring electronica band Underworld. Earlier this year, Akamai announced the industry's first variable bit rate streaming support for live and high quality video content on the iPhone and iPod touch. Variable bit rate streaming was a key feature delivered in the recent iPhone 3.0 update and this new capability expands Akamai's ability to provide consumers with the highest quality video streaming experience on their iPhone or iPod touch.

HSN, the leading interactive lifestyle network and retail destination, recently announced the launch of its HSN Shop App for the iPhone and iPod Touch, with Inlet's Spinnaker providing the encoding backbone. With an exceptional viewing experience and diminished latency, HSN customers can now use their iPhones to enjoy a full television experience and move through the purchasing process quickly. Inlet provided encoding services to MLB.com for the upgrade of its At Bat 2009TM offering to allow for delivery of live game streams to the iPhone and iPod Touch and through its Israeli partner, Pocketized, to Reshet TV's iPhone streaming of the season finale of "The Amazing Race Israel."

The iPhone 3.0 OS now includes built-in support for adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming for live and on-demand video, providing consumers with faster start-up times and reduced video buffering on all 3.0-enabled devices. Inlet Technologies was one of the first encoding technology providers to publicly demonstrate and support streaming to the iPhone, and Inlet's SpinnakerTM live streaming solution provides the highest-quality viewing experience while offering exciting features consumers have come to expect in other devices, such as the ability to pause, rewind, or fast forward through content.

"The iPhone is clearly a pervasive consumer device, offering compelling opportunities to reach millions of viewers." said John Bishop, senior vice president of strategy and business development, Inlet Technologies. "Streaming iPhone content elevates the user experience to an entirely new level - putting more personalized and high-quality content literally into their hands for viewing on the go."

About Inlet Technologies

iStockphoto Legally Guarantees All Image, Video and Audio Files in Five Million-Plus Collection

Starting today, iStockphoto becomes the first micropayment royalty-free image, video and audio provider to legally guarantee all files in its collection – at no cost to the customer. iStock promises that files purchased and used in accordance with the iStock license, will not breach any trademark, copyright or other intellectual property rights or rights of privacy.

The iStock Legal Guarantee provides that, if a customer receives a claim, iStock will cover the customer’s legal costs and direct damages to a combined total of $10,000. iStock customers looking for additional peace of mind can also purchase an extension of the Legal Guarantee for 100 iStock credits, increasing iStock’s coverage for legal fees and direct damages up to a combined total of $250,000.

“Our first line of defense has always been - and continues to be - our rigorous inspection process,” said Kelly Thompson, Chief Operating Officer of iStockphoto. “The Legal Guarantee is simply an added layer of protection for our customers, many of whom are using microstock more than ever before.”

Guaranteed Multimedia Files — What it Means
The iStock Legal Guarantee provides added assurance for clients. From large advertising agencies and their clients to small businesses developing a website, presentation or blog, iStock is one of the safest and most affordable destinations for multimedia files.

Every file accepted into iStockphoto’s collection has undergone a meticulous examination. In addition to following some of the strictest quality standards in the industry, iStock’s seasoned team of inspectors goes to great lengths to ensure submissions follow the appropriate legal and ethical guidelines.

“There are certainly millions of images available on the Web, but most are not cleared for commercial usage. Creative Commons images can be perfect for some projects, but there are little to no formal inspections on those files, so iStock offers a much safer and suitable alternative when using multimedia,” Thompson added.

As the microstock industry leader, iStock also keeps a technical wiki on copyright and trademark issues around the world, as it is not always obvious what is prohibited to shoot as stock, and the rules vary in nearly every country. Who knew, for example that certain stitching on jeans is protected by trademark? iStock knows.

About iStock
iStockphoto offers easy, affordable inspiration with millions of safe, royalty-free photos, illustrations, video, audio and Flash® files. Using the most accurate search in the business, customers download a file at least every second from a collection of more than five million files for business, marketing and personal projects. iStockphoto started in 2000, pioneering the micropayment photography business model, and has become one of the most successful and profitable user-generated content sites in the world. iStockphoto pays out approximately $1.2 million weekly in artist royalties. iStockphoto is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Getty Images.

Blackmagic Design Announces the Purchase of all Assets of DaVinci Systems LLC

Blackmagic Design today announced the purchase of all assets of DaVinci Systems LLC. This purchase means Blackmagic Design will now offer DaVinci Resolve DI color correction systems and DaVinci Revival film restoration products for sale worldwide.

DaVinci Resolve working with stereoscopic 3D and 4K, and DaVinci Revival film restoration will be demonstrated at IBC 2009 at the DaVinci booth 7.D08.

Since 1984 DaVinci have been, and continue to be, the standard in post production. There are thousands of colorists worldwide who understand the performance, quality and workflow of DaVinci color correction systems. DaVinci is the name behind more feature films, television commercials, documentaries, episodic television production and music videos than any other grading system.

DaVinci Resolve is unique in supporting more real time color correction than any other system. This advantage is because DaVinci Resolve is not limited by the computer it's running on. DaVinci Resolve is based on a cluster of computers with high performance GPU cards, so all processing is always real time.

This means DaVinci Resolve has the power of a super computer for the real time performance of all color grades even when using dozens of primaries, secondaries, power windowsTM, multi point tracking, blurs, and more. With DaVinci Resolve, this is all real time, and if customers need more power for higher resolutions or more "nodes" of color correction, they can add more computers or GPU cards for the additional power.

Blackmagic Design has also initiated a wide ranging restructure of the DaVinci business. The new focus will now be on the DaVinci Resolve color correction and DaVinci Revival film restoration products. The company believes these products represent the future of color correction and film restoration and the company has many exciting ideas for future developments.

DaVinci Resolve already has the power to handle complex color grades in real time even at native 4K resolutions and in stereoscopic 3D. These are the features that are vital on modern post production workflows. To accelerate development, DaVinci Resolve and DaVinci Revival engineering teams have already been expanded and further expansion is currently underway.

Due to the age of the DaVinci 2K systems which were originally launched in 1999, Blackmagic Design will cease marketing 2K systems immediately. Support for 2K systems will continue and plenty of spare parts are available for customer repairs. Engineering will be dedicated to bug fix updates and small feature releases.

Annual support contracts will also immediately cease, and a new "pay as you go" system will be initiated so customers only need to pay if a fault occurs. Blackmagic Design believes this will save customers thousands of dollars of unused support payments. Customers can pay for any repairs required, and purchase and repair of second hand DaVinci products will be supported when possible. This will greatly improve the resale value of second hand DaVinci products.

"I remember back in 1988 to the first day I started in post production and was shown the telecine suite with DaVinci. I could not believe the quality of the images on the monitor, and that was the moment I fell in love with high quality imaging and color correction," said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. "I worked hard to become a telecine engineer, and for me it was the most exciting job in post production. It's been a while since I was a telecine engineer, however it's incredibly exciting to be back involved with DaVinci again! We have a lot to live up to and many fantastic ideas, so it's a very exciting time!"

Blackmagic Design's DaVinci products will also get improved marketing, and this includes a new web site already posted at www.blackmagic-design.com/davinci/

DaVinci Resolve and DaVinci Revival are available now from authorized Blackmagic Design DaVinci Certified Resellers. These resellers are listed at www.blackmagic-design.com/davinci/distributors/.

Sound Devices Introduces 552 Production Mixer at IBC 2009

At IBC 2009 (Stand 8.E72), Sound Devices introduces a brand new addition to its best-selling line of portable mixers- the 552 Production Mixer, the company's first to feature a fully integrated digital audio recorder.

Ideal for both simple run-and-gun applications and in complex multi-input/multi-output production setups, Sound Devices 552 is the most technologically advanced portable audio mixer available to date.

Designed specifically for professional sound engineers, Sound Devices 552 contains five precision, high-dynamic range, transformer-balanced microphone inputs with expanded gain and headroom. The studio-grade inputs have their own limiter, sweepable high-pass filter and pre- or post-fade direct output. At the heart of each microphone input lies a high-performance Lundahl input transformer, which provides freedom from interference in even the most severe RF and EMI environments that are encountered in the field.

Additionally, Sound Devices 552 has an integrated two-track, 24-bit digital audio recorder that writes Broadcast WAV files or MP3 files to SD and SDHC media. The recorder is ideal for applications where a high-quality, 24-bit local recording is required. Either the outputs or combinations of inputs and outputs can be assigned as record sources.

"The introduction of the 552 marks a new level of audio technology for field production," says Jon Tatooles, managing director of Sound Devices. "The majority of our customers are full-time sound mixers and engineers who are conscientious of quality, size and weight. We can now offer them even more portability and flexibility with a single machine, thus reducing the weight of their kit and offering unparalleled audio quality. The 552 is the perfect centerpiece of a premium field production audio kit."

Sound Devices 552 also allows for stereo linking of input pairs 1/2 and 3/4. With 44.1, 48 48.048, 88.2, and 96 kHz sampling rates, its four-track AES3 digital output runs at the same sample rate as the built-in recorder.

Featuring front-panel control of mic/line inputs and phantom status with LED indication at each input, Sound Devices new user friendly mixer is also designed with sunlight-viewable, 21-segment Peak/VU meters with zoom mode. The model is also equipped with voice-driven setup and option menu. Sound Devices 552 also features a mini USB port for field-upgradeable firmware and is powered by four AA batteries or an external 10-18 VDC.

The 552, like all Sound Devices products, is designed to withstand the physical and environmental extremes of field production. Its top and bottom chassis panels are made from molded, metalized carbon fiber for superior durability and weight reduction. The front panel is also gasketed for water resistance.

Sound Devices, LLC designs and manufactures portable audio mixers, digital recorders and related audio equipment for feature film, episodic television, documentary, news-gathering, and acoustical test and measurement applications. The eleven-year old company designs and manufactures from their Reedsburg, Wisconsin headquarters with additional offices in Madison, WI and Highland Park, IL.
